Tips for Making Family Sessions Easier

If you’re in Utah, chances are your child is back in school by now or will be very soon. Which means Halloween costumes are already in stores and Fall Family Photo Season is almost here! Time to start thinking about the when, where, what to wear, and everything in between for your perfect session.

Tips for Making Family Sessions Easier

1- Book your session in advance

Not only does this eliminate the stress of quickly putting something together, you’ll have plenty of time to find the perfect outfits, decide on a location, and make sure your husband is prepared so he can show up with his best attitude ;) plus there is less holiday stress and plenty of time to order Christmas cards if you get your photos done at the beginning of the season. And BONUS your kids’ back to school haircuts are still looking fresh! Win-win-win!

2- Start with Mom’s outfit first

I tell this to all my clients. If you want to have the perfect outfit choices, start with YOUR outfit first and then create the color scheme and everyone else’s outfits to coordinate. If you feel beautiful and comfortable in your wardrobe choice you’re going to feel confident and happy at your session - and believe me, it will come through in your photos!

This doesn’t mean you need to buy something new, although you can if you want! But start with something that you feel great in, new or old, and go from there.

3- Let your home be your color guide

The goal is (hopefully) to print your photos and display them around your house. Let your home’s color scheme match, or coordinate with, your family’s outfits. If you have a lot of neutrals, go with that scheme. If you have blues, make sure to incorporate some blue. This is also true of location choices. Let’s pick a location that will fit with your home’s aesthetic, or what you hope your aesthetic will be if you’re redecorating or planning to make changes.

4- Take a deep breath and let the photographer lead

Just like you trust your hairstylist to cut/color/style your hair how you wanted, you can trust your photographer to get the photos you want plus the photos you never knew you needed. I’m really good at getting the posed shots plus the all moments in-between for a session with lots of variety. I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to get your children to look and smile, so let go of that anxiety, mama! I got you!

5- Location, location, location

Like I mentioned before, keep your home’s color scheme in mind with choosing a location so that the colors of the background won’t clash with your decor. But more than that, choose a location that is safe and fits with your family’s personality. There are a couple locations that I frequent every year due to their popularity but because of the surroundings, mom is usually filled with so much anxiety when one child wants to run off and climb the rocks all the way to the top and little brother follows. There is usually a time in the session when your children will get to take a break while we photograph just mom and dad. If your children love to explore and you’re worried they’ll run off, get lost or get hurt, let’s pick a location where that is less possible. I have lots of options so if you’re looking for something specific, just ask!

Family sessions are my favorite! I love working with your kids and getting to witness how you play, how you love them, and how they love you.

If you’re ready to book your session, contact me and let’s set it up!
